Cities and counties across the country either have, or are presently considering, ordinances which will ban ownership of, or restrict ownership, of a pit bull type dog, and/or other large breed dogs.
How BSL of Pit Bull type dogs affects its’ owners?
You can be fined for having a dog breed or type, you can be forced to muzzle your dog in public, you can be required to have $200,000 liability insurance coverage for your dog (many Ohio counties require this if pit bulls are not outright banned), your dog can be seized and euthanized, you cannot own a certain dog breed or type. Hard to believe, but in counties throughout the United States owning a pit bull is against the law, and since 2005 in Denver, CO an owned pit bull is seized and euthanized (In Denver, more than 4,000 family pets have been seized and euthanized, because they were classified as pit bull type.)

How does BSL affect Animal Welfare
The affect BSL has on homeless dogs is depending where the shelter is where they are located, they may be euthanized, either because the shelter is prohibited from adopting them out, or because there are so many breed restrictions in the area served by the shelter that the animal will not have the time required for it to find a home in a “safe” area.
Families who move to a new area may find their family pet is prohibited, and are unable to keep their pet. These pets are often turned into shelters where they are euthanized in most cases. BSL without a doubt kills many adoptable dogs, and if it goes to the full extent possible, BSL will also kill dogs that are part of a family.
